Got Vapor Lock?

Mountain Vapor

Yeah, I know... The guy that lives at 7000 feet and drives over the mountains a few times a year for the last 6 years should have the vapor lock thing figured out right? Well, it is just a thing. =8-) Right after we picked up Ryan, we got gas and had some engine stumble just before we pulled in to the station. Then later on the way to Pagosa Springs, we had to pull over to cool that puppy off. But the temp guage read 210 degrees. I had just put a new 4 row radiator in Wally before this trip. The 401 was running cooler than it ever has. It still vapor locked. That means it is boiling right near the carb right? Well, hope so. We stopped in Pagosa Springs and strapped a 7lb. block of ice on the fuel line sitting on the driver side valve cover. At the last rest stop 8 miles before Wolf Creek Pass, pulled over and considered driving it into the water fall. Nope, that would delay us more with electrical issues. The ice was still holding on and engine temp still 210. So, we wanted over the pass before it got too late. We just ripped the hood off Wally and Krista carried it on top of Phoebe the next 2 days! There is a dead air hotspot under the hood at highway speeds where the fuel is getting too hot. We did not have any more vapor lock issues with our rigs the rest of the trip. Well, Jason had a little delay getting over Imogene Pass. Go figure...
