Stoney Pass

American flag on ridge far above 30 Mile Campground

On Monday, July 17th, Krista and I left the house with two fully loaded Wagoneers and a crazy lab mix with one blue eye and went to pick up Ryan (Gambler68) in Ignacio. We were headed for Creede and beyond to the 30 Mile Campground to meet up with Don and Doris S, Steve (Viscacha) and Tom (Hoot). Once we got over some vapor locking issues on my GW, we got over Wolf Creek Pass and on to Creede. The drive up from Hwy 160 was beautiful. Topped off gas and headed for the campground. We were all excited for the next week of trail riding the San Juan Mountains again. We met up with Steve, Don and Doris fine but we got quite the story about Hoot running over a motorcycle down in New Mexico. He was hoping to get to Ouray somehow in spite of his joy ride. Don said he saw ole Hoot airborne in his rear view!

We made camp, ate and visited with the rest at Steve's site. We all did a shot of of Don's Jose Gold except for Doris and watched the fire for a bit. That got the week started. It rained off and on over night. The next morning was clearing and bright. The Jacobs on my GW did not like getting rained on since the hood was removed to remedy the vapor lock the previous day. So I disconnected it and started the 401 on the stock ignition. We headed out around 10:00 AM. Krista and I had not driven Stoney Pass before, so we were even more excited for the new adventure. Steve had a little vapor lock at one point but the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful with exception of the awesome display of flowers in the alpine meadows! We saw some snow on the way down. The sky had been building some dark clouds since around noon. We made it to Silverton to have lunch. Then it was off to the KOA in Ouray to get ready for the rest of the gathering.

Yes, we watched snow dust the peaks across the canyon and Animas River on the way down.
